Our 40% silver braze alloy is a lower brazing temperature with a narrower melting range than other cadmium-free classifications with similar silver content. This is a good intermediate temperature brazing alloy for use on stainless steels, mild steels, cast & malleable irons, & various non-ferrous alloys. This alloy is particularly useful for brazing stainless steel food containers & food handling equipment where a cadmium free brazing alloy is specified. This alloy contains less silver than our standard braze alloy which keeps its cost lower.
This 40 % silver braze alloy has a tendency to liquate (i.e. separate into low & high melting constituents) & therefore it is preferable to use this filler metal where the assembly can be heated rapidly through the filler metal melting range, or where the assembly can be preheated before the filler metal is applied .
A common corrosion test for stainless steel joints is the 20% salt spray test. During a 10 day exposure, joints in 18-8 stainless lost up to 50% of their original strength. Bag-28 retards interface corrosion in brazed joints on stainless steels of the 300 & 400 series. Even so, joints in the 400 series remain more susceptible than those in the 300 series. Similar tests on copper & brass joints showed substantially no loss: joints in nickel-silver & Monel showed up to 25% loss.
