Downcut tools are used where the downshearing effect of the tool is preferred. This tool will produce a clean top edge cut of dado type or groove type cut or a simple thru-cut where the bottom edge cut quality is not important. Downshear bits direct chip flow downward and help hold the part onto the table or pods. 

Compression Spirals have an "up-cut/downcut" design and will give you a nice clean cut on both the top and bottom of material with no splintering or tear out.

The upcut spiral will provide a smooth bottom finish, while augering the chips upward. Due to the upcut design and the included angle of the cutting edge, these tools are razor sharp!
